This is one of my secret favorite mini comix (affectionately nicknamed, “the extinction minicomic”), and it’s hard to explain exactly why. Maybe it’s part of human nature’s love affair with “the end” and apocalypse, from those who have always wanted to see a biblical revelation raining fire onto earth to our modern obsession with zombies and dystopian post-nuclear futures. But I think it’s mainly because this comic delves into the comedy of despair, one of my favorite subjects for comics, and one that’s hard to pull off, but which I think is tied intrinsically to Mission Mini-Comix’s “brand”. Humor is supposedly hard in and of itself, but an even greater challenge is to make someone feel like shit but feel like laughing anyways (dang, that should be part of our mission statement).

“Because sometimes when you laugh at the abyss, the abyss laughs back unto you?”

Anyways, don’t want to over-analyze this one too much before I suck all the fun out of it for myself.

The first, fourth and 6th panels were drawn by me, the 2nd, 5th. 7th and 8th were drawn by Mikey and the third was drawn by “Kate Silver” and the cover was pretty much inspired by hive colony collapse disorder (spoiler alert: it was pesticides!) as well as a bunch of news reports of mass bird die offs that were happening at the time.
